Rich Internet Application (RIA) Development

RIAs are those flashy sites that are more like watching a movie than clicking around in a browser. When Macromedia launched the Flash Player people could experience the internet in a way that changed online experiences forever.

Originally Flash was designed to create and deliver animated vector graphics that were small enough to download over the internet, which at the time took forever. As internet speeds have increased so has the size of the file, so you still have to wait sometimes, but the experience is much more enganging.

The Flash Player is ubiquitous - currently estimated at 99.3% of all browsers*. This adoption rate has made it the defacto standard for interactive content online, even the videos you watch on YouTube are played in a Flash Player (YouTube convert the videos into a different format to overcome the iPhones limitations).

With entertainment leading the development of online applications it wasn't long before businesses realised they could tap into this enbgangement with their customers and sites evolved.
