
Flex is a framework specifically developed for RIA - Rich Internet Applications. Adobe Flex applications run in the ubiquitous Adobe Flash Player.
The Flex framework uses MXML, which is a proprietory version of XML, which is interpreted by the compiler into Actionscipt. Actionscript is the code behind Flash Applications and Adobe Air Applications, which can be deployed to the desktop.
ActionScript was originally developed by Macromedia for creating animation and vector based graphics. As more applications were taking advantage of Flash the need for a more robust programming language arose, this was improved with the release of Flex Builder.
